What Does It Mean When the Tire Pressure Light Continuously Blinks on a 2006 Toyota Tacoma

  1. Another dumb question but how does a spare that's under the truck not connected to anything have an impact on the issue. Long day, my mind is mush but I'm missing something obviously

Haha I hear ya! It still has a TPMS (if your year, model, trim, etc includes it) and the computer continually reads it. If one sensor goes bad or has lower pressure, it triggers the light. TPMS systems are wireless so it is always connected.

I was at an AutoZone years ago, guy in line in front of me wanted to buy windshield wipers. Autozone employee was entering his vehicles info to determine the size and asked him if it was 4x4 or 2wd.

  4. Ok so I bought four new factory rims and used one of my old rims/tires as spare because my factory spare was rusted so bad but it's been under my truck for two months so I don't see how it would impact the issue
  5. Holy hell, I would've walked out

So, do we know if the shop transferred the valve/TPMS from the old spare to your old rim/new spare? Do we also know if they transferred the rest of the TPMS to the rest of the wheels. I guess I'm trying to figure out if your spare ever had a TPMS. Has the light been flashing since 2 months ago or just started recently?

If you have a 2006 check your spare tire pressure. If you haven't replaced the sensors in all 5 tires yet it is likely one or more of them are dead or about to die. They do not last forever. Also the alloy and steel wheels use different style sensors.

my understanding is Flashing = Sensor or Comm Box, Solid = Tire Pressure

Or missing sensors altogether. The OP installed four new rims. I am betting no sensors were installed on the new rims. Or if so, the wrong type. Plus he transferred one of the old ones as a spare, no telling it that has a sensor, if its battery is dead, etc etc.

I am betting he bought four new rims. And then some tires, at an independent tire dealer. But the new rims do NOT have sensors on them. :) If so, the issue of the spare is not even in this equation, just yet.

Mine started blinking then going out about 3 months ago. Blinks for certain number of blinks, stays on, then shuts off. I figure it's the battery going bad in some of the TPMS sensors since I actually set my tire pressures every few weeks. Just disable the TPMS and adjust your tire pressures monthly. And buy new tires right at month 36 before they start cracking in the tread wells. F these useless, stupid people sensors.

I have heard rumor more than once of lazy/overly fast shop workers smacking the crap out of a sensor with the tire mounting machine and either destroying the sensor or damaging it enough that it fails later.

Best bet at this point is for OP to either plug in a Snap-On Solus like @b_r_o suggested or take it to a shop. They can take a peak and will probably see something like this image that I stole from google that probably came from Tacomaworld:

As added info a standard OBD-II reader will not read TPMS stuff, you will need a more expensive device that says it can read Toyota stuff, like the Solus.

Some people want it to work. Some don't gaf. Why are you offended by this. Checking pressure regularly is a good idea either way.

  15. I know they definitely didn't transfer anything and as far as the light just started flashing this morning and I asked Soum that I had ran over a nail and was about to have a major flat so I pulled over and added air and check for nails but didn't see anything and once I got home I adjusted the air pressure to exactly where it supposed to be. Like I said Isn't really that bothersome I just wanted to make sure that it wasn't something serious that was going to cause other problems. So I'll just let it be I guess. Looks like I'm about to acquire a 98 yota Land cruiser at a killer price. Drive train seems solid and no major issues. Need a weekend vehicle. Thing is loaded with 4x4. Did research and it's coming back positive. Thing is a tank, guess that'll be my next toy to tinker with. Thanks for the advice but I think I'm done wasting y'all's time on this light issue. I have to replace my right front wheel bearing on the Tacoma and it should be good to go
  16. Sorry about the misspelling, i miss my Android... iPhone talk to text is garbage

Because there is no screen or display to advise the driver of the 4 tire pressures upon request. That's why. I shouldn't need to have a windows xp laptop strapped into the passenger seat to read the tire pressure. TPMS is literally an idiot indicator light in the 2nd gens, at least up through the 2011. I've been driving for 20+ years and grew up without the internet...I don't need some very simplistic implementation of technology advising me the state of health of my tires.

Fair enough. I wasn't challenging you. I was just curious about what drives your opinion. Thanks for elaborating.
You have to admit that there is no shortage of idiot drivers out there. I want those idiot drivers to have even the simplistic tech for my safety, not their safety.
Sadly I was driving before you were born. It seems the older I get the more I want to get even older. Just my perspective, not that you asked.
  19. be sure to check the spare which is what got me last year.

A Toyota service writer told me that the TPMS in the spare is specific to the spare, cannot be used in any other tire location. I think he's full of it. My spare rim is so rusty, I doubt it would even mount. I would like to use that space for a pancake air tank, don't have a solution.
